Jake smiles. "She's doing great, man! She's at home now and raring to go. We always have to keep an eye on her otherwise she'd jump straight out of bed!" He laughs.
"I'm glad. You guys were so worried for awhile."
"I know." He sighs. "It was like walking on eggshells all the time. We were just waiting for the call any day, and when it actually comes it's because Mom's trying to break out of her room!"
I laugh. "Yeah, that does sound like her. How's your dad taking it? He's good now, right?"
"Yep!" Jake grins. "He's still trying to get used to taking care of all of us, making sure Mom gets her meds, taking my little brothers to school, and..." Jake shudders and lowers his voice to a whisper. "Don't tell him I said this, 'cause he's really trying hard, but his cooking absolutely sucks. Us kids just shuffle the food around enough that it looks eaten and then we get ourselves some cup ramen after he's asleep.
"Like, I love Dad, but I would die happy if I never had to eat his cooking again." He throws his arms up in the air. "I even went with the Jones' to church on Sunday just so I could pray for Mom's speedy recovery!"
"That bad, huh?" I say with a chuckle.
He nods. "That bad."
