Atahualpa, born in 1500, was the thirteenth Inca ruler, and although he had successors named by the Spaniards he is considered the last Inca emperor.
He was captured by the Spanish Francisco Pizarro when he refused to convert to Christianity and did not accept the authority of King Carlos I of Spain over his territory, all this after a battle between the Spaniards and the Incas, in which many indigenous people died.
A few months later he was accused of treason by the Spaniards, of hiding a treasure, conspiracy against the Spanish crown and of killing Huáscar (his brother whom he killed to obtain more territory in his kingdom).
He was finally executed on July 26, 1533. He chose to be strangled after being baptized as a Christian; the other option was to die burned if he was not baptized.
