The elections which took place 50 years ago were often greatly influenced by party identification, regardless of the candidates being presented. Party identification is the concept of loyalty to a political party despite the candidate representing it. Voters would agree with the overall views of the party and vote accordingly, without taking into account the individual views of the candidate, which made decision-making for voting easier.

This is in contrast to today, where political candidates no longer need to fully depend on the political party to which they are affiliated. This is due to the increase in marketing, propaganda, and overall communication technology in the past 50 years.

The advances we have today make it possible for candidates to transmit their views and ideas to the public and allow voters to make decisions based on the beliefs of individual candidates as opposed to voting for a party and hoping the candidate performs according to those views.
