Well, there are a lot of differences when it comes to individuals and countries. Individuals deal with economics based on microeconomics, and countries deal with it on the base of macroeconomics (the big picture).
However, they both must deal with things like:
- Inflation
- External costs
- Acquiring/providing public goods
- Dealing with economic welfare
- Utilities
- Living standards
- Trading and interacting with neighbors (locally or internationally)
- Improving the environment
In general, it was an increase in the service industry that led to a decline in labor union membership, since many of these workers don't need representation.
Globalization in the U.S was driven by technological changes, financial liberalization with free flow of capital, labor, goods and services. This created an economic system, where Americans shifted from an economic system based on crafts to a more technological one.
