DONATELLO: for context donatello had a really complex & troubled history with the catholic church. some interpret his version as satirical of the church or an innuendo because of smaller details like the placement of the feather going down his thigh - in this way, he is adhering less to conventional Christian principles - David’s frame is more boyish in this one, howd he kill a giant? though posed proudly or slenderly this also could heavily relate to religious undertones, as if he was assisted by Christ or is divine himself to accomplish slaying Goliath - independence, strength, youth & beauty - wearing only boots and a helmet
VERROCCHIO: - the fact that david stands on Goliath’s detached head here adds a balance of masculine and militaristic values like strength or invincibly. this makes a statement of David as a conqueror or victor, unlike Donatello’s he looks more mature or manly which touches upon mortality rather than divine assistance. the accomplishment of man and mortal was really relevant as a renaissance theme - Represents Florence’s growth/prosperity on the rise - triumph over foes, masculinity, strength
