Schubert's “Erlkönig” is a lied ballad based on the poem “Erlkönig” by using Johann Wolfgang Van Goethe. A lied ballad is a form of miniature composition (Greenberg, 209) wherein a narrative piece (normally a poem) serves as the fundamental difficulty relying on a track.
Its form is through-composed music; even though the melodic motives recur, the harmonic structure is constantly changing and the piece modulates within the four characters.
