The three groups who used the site for religious purposes were:

  • the Gauls
  • the Romans
  • the Christians

Before the Notre Dame Cathedral was built at the order of the Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully, there were other structures on the site belonging to other groups of people which were:

  • Gauls - Gauls used to live in France during Roman times and they built a temple to Jupitar after they were conquered by the Romans.

  • Romans - Romans worshipped Jupitar and so would come to the temple built by the Gauls to worship. As many Gauls received Roman citizenship, they were called Romans as well.

  • Christians - before the Notre Dame was built, there was a church on the site called, the Cathedral of Saint Étienne. It was smaller than the Notre Dame Cathedral but used by Christians to worship.

In conclusion, the Notre Dame Cathedral is a huge symbol in France and represents a wonderful feat of architecture. It was however built on land that had other purposes before it.

Pagan Temple: It was believed that during the time of Roman Lutetia, a Pagan Temple was situated at that location.2. Romanesque Church: It is believed that a Romanesque church was built between the 4th century and 7th century by the Basilica of Saint Etienne. The basilica was forty meters west of the current cathedral and was half its size.3. Question: Explain how the development of ribbed vaults and flying buttresses enabled gothic architects to change the structure of the buildings.

answer: -Pointed arches are better approximations of catenary curves that represent the line of compressive force acting in any arch, and thus they exert less outward or overturning thrust. They also present considerable design flexibility, as one can vary to some extent the angle of the arch. -Rib vaulting builders found that they could lighten the webbing, thereby reducing the material weight of the groin. Reducing the weight of the stone, would allow them to also build to greater building heights. -Flying Butresses were created to strengthen the upper sections of the skeleton frame because the height of these buildings left them needing reinforcement.
