Following the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium theory, the frequency of the heter0zyg0us genotype is 2pq. In the exposed example, 2pq = 0.48.

Hardy-Winberg equilibrium

The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium theory states that the allelic frequencies in a locus are represented as p and q.

Assuming a diallelic gene,

→ The allelic frequencies are

 • p is the frequency of the dominant allele,
 • q is the frequency of the recessive allele.

→ The genotypic frequencies after one generation are

 • p² (H0m0zyg0us dominant genotypic frequency),
 • 2pq (Heter0zyg0us genotypic frequency),
 • q² (H0m0zyg0us recessive genotypic frequency).

If a population is in H-W equilibrium, it gets the same allelic and genotypic frequencies generation after generation.

The addition of the allelic frequencies equals 1 ⇒ p + q = 1.

The sum of genotypic frequencies equals 1 ⇒ p² + 2pq + q² = 1

If the allele A has a frequency of 0.6, and the allele B has a frequency of 0.4, then the frequency of the heter0zyg0us genotype is

2pq = 2 x 0.6 x 0.4 = 0.48

What does this graph tell you?A: Arctic sea ice has shrunk by over 2,000 square miles in the last 50 years.B: Arctic sea ice has
Evgen [1.6K]

The graph shows, in a period of time between 1978 and 2010. Therefore, it's related to the last 50 years, not the last 100 years, meaning that alternative D is wrong. The amount of sea ice shown in the graph is shown in the scale of million square miles. So, as the graph shows an initial value around 3.2 (3 millions and 2 hundred miles) and it ends up in a value around 2.2 (2 millions and 2 hundred miles), still the real values are around 2.8 (2 million and 8 hundred thousands initially) and 2.0 (2 millions at the end), having a lower value of 1.8 (1 million and 8 hundred thousand); So, in both scenarios, arctic sea ice has shrunk by 1,000,000 (1.0) square miles, being under 2,000,000, not over. Therefore, the highest number to be inside this amount is 2,000, so the correct answer is A: Arctic sea ice has shrunk by over 2,000 square miles in the last 50 years.
