His political and spiritual leadership started early in his life, with the age of 23, in 1893 he moved to South Africa and spent 21 years in that country. He participated at the South African Civil right activism until 1914. He returned to India in 1915 and until 1947 he struggled for Indian independence from the United Kingdom.
