He proposed a series of constitutional amendments and Congressional legislation aimed at averting war. Under the terms of the “Crittenden Compromise” the following were proposed, that: 

<span>* The Missouri Compromise line (36˚30’ north latitude) be extended through the territories to California; north of the line were to be free states and slave states to the south </span>
<span>* Congress would not attempt to regulate slavery where it then existed </span>
<span>* Congress would provide compensation for the owners of fugitive slaves.</span>

<span>It could be the Policy of Appeasement where you aggressive nations what they want to avoid conflict.  The best example of this was during Germany’s conquest of Europe.  In the hopes to prevent a war, Britain and France had allowed the Germans to take Sudentenland from Czechoslovakia.  Despite acquiring Czech territory the Germans continued with their campaign which led to World War II.</span>
