It's an identity if it has infinite solutions and everything is right, which would mean that if both sides of the equation are equal after eliminating the variable then the variable does not matter and it will always be equal. If it is not equal after eliminating the variable then that means that no matter what the variable is, it does not matter and the equation will have no solution
