George Calvert was an Englishman who arrived to what is now modern day Canada (Newfoundland) and the United States (Maryland) in hopes of establishing a colony where Catholicism would prosper as it could not in his native land. Roger Williams was a Protestant theologian who was a proponent of religious liberty and of the separation of church and state. William Penn was also a proponent of religious freedom.
