The Mediterranean is the world's most overfished sea, with the highest percentage of unsustainably harvested fish populations, according to a recent report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Increasing human activity makes Mediterranean marine ecosystems some of the most imperiled in the world. It is polluted by an estimated 730 tonnes of plastic waste every day. Plastics account for between 95 to 100% of total floating litter, and more than 50% of seabed litter. Single-use plastics represent more than 60% of the total recorded marine litter on beaches.
