Here is the complete sentence: INTERLUDE were short comedic plays that introduce real characters who were more fully developed than characters in allegories. These short plays helped to LIGHTEN the mood in the midst of serious, instructive plays.
An interlude is a type of English dramatic entertainment that was popular in the early days. It is usually performed at courts by professional minstrels in between some other forms of entertainment. These interludes served to lessen the seriousness of more serious entertainments.
In the medieval European entertainment, a minstrel can be any type of entertainer such as musician, poet, acrobat, juggler or a court fool.
