When the author brings up these symptoms they are hooking us in by making us think, "have I ever experienced any of these?" So, D foreshadows the topic but first makes the reader think about the subject which they might have a relation to.

So, to sum this up the reason why A is missing it's thesis statement is because quotes belong in the body paragraphs and they are supposed to support the claim which can be found in the hook.
