Historians regard the Mayflower Compact as the forerunner to our US Constitution because it was the first document to establish self-government in the new world.

<h3>What was the Mayflower Compact?</h3>

     The Mayflower Compact, which was originally known as the Agreement Between the Settlers of New Plymouth, was the first set of official governing document of Plymouth Colony.

   This set of rules was written by the male passengers of the Mayflower, made up  of separatist Puritans, adventurers, and tradesmen.

   At that time, the Puritans were fleeing from religious persecution by King James I of England.
