The great compromise created a functional and fair representative congress. It was the result of a dispute between New Jersey and V (can't let me type the full state). That states with a large population made the V (can't let me type the full state) plan, which was to base the number of representatives on the state's population. However the states with a smaller population which wanted to be as equally represented disagreed. The smaller population states created the New Jersey plan which was to give each state an equal number of representatives. Thus, to solve the debate, the founding fathers chose New Jersey's plan for the house of representatives, but to make the other side happy, V (can't let me type the full state) got what they wanted, but instead of representatives based on population for each state, it was applied to the senates. Basically, each state got the same number of representatives to represent its interests, just as the states with a smaller population wanted. Then, in the end, the number of senators in each state was determined by its population, just like what the large population states wanted. In addition, the house of representatives got more power than the senate. By giving each state approximately an equal power in Congress, this created a functional and fair congress.
