the speaker visualises American identity as  unifed(that is a state of being whole,unity and oneness) but yet it is quite different. the phrase in the poem "varied carols" talks about an american that shares a common vision  with others but uses different methods just to achieve those goals. Americans are singing together, but each person is singing his or her own "varied carol" of the American song.

''I hear american sing", a poem by  Walt Whitman. the writer view  the united state as as the union or join forces of  american  voices and the title gave out the effect of a nation that sings, rather than one that simply speaks or murmurs. The act  and  the word "singing" in the poem  shows hope and a unified vision for America. it is a visualization of American Dream.
