Tan's essay is a “compare/ contrast” essay because it is presented as a comparison of the English language.

How to depict an essay?

Tan exposes his ideas and provides examples of his personal experiences and she gives a definition of “mother tongue” and she resorts to his mother to provide a clear example of this topic.

She provides more examples to illustrate her point. It could be said that the text is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 presents some situations about different styles of English. Part 2 addresses her mother's limitations with the language and the last part, focuses on her and how she wrote her stories.

Sunflower and other flowers which belong to the family Asteraceae show such kind of behaviour. These flowers might have a random orientation at night. But at the time of morning, they turn east towards the sun and follow its direction throughout the day.
