The 1820 Missouri Compromise set the dividing line between slave and free states at "36 degrees 30 minutes".

What is Missouri Compromise (1820)?

In order to maintain the country's balance between slave and free states, this legislation simultaneously accepted Maine as a non-slave state and Missouri as a slave state. In the remaining Louisiana Territory, above the 36° 30' latitude line, slavery was likewise prohibited.

Some key features of Missouri compromise are-

 • The long-standing distribution of slave and free states would be altered with the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory and Missouri's quest for statehood.
 • Slavery became a contentious topic within Congress.
 • In order to maintain the nation's balance of slave and free states, Congress passed this legislation and simultaneously admitted Maine as a non-slave state and Missouri as a slave state.
 • The Missouri Compromise also suggested that slavery be outlawed in the remaining Louisiana Territory north of the 36 degrees 30' latitude line.
 • Before the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 eliminated it, this clause was in effect for 34 years.
 • The Supreme Court decided against the Missouri Compromise in 1857.
