Drawing media are grouped as liquid and dry.

The act of making marks with a tool on a surface is called drawing. There are liquid and dry drawing mediums. A dry medium leaves a small-particle mark that can be smudged or rubbed to blend. In a wet medium, pigment is dissolved in a liquid, such as water or alcohol. A pen or brush are necessary tools for drawing with wet media.

Pencils are one type of dry drawing media. Although they are made of graphite, a mixture of clay and carbon, they are sometimes referred to as lead pencils. There are several thicknesses of drawing pencils. Soft pencils draw black lines that are precise and light, whereas hard pencils do the opposite. Images that will be finalised in different media are sketched out and roughed out with drawing pencils.

Similar to chalk are pastels, another type of dry sketching medium. To create them, powdered pigments are combined with a clay binder, which enables the sticks to dry into a rich hue. More powdery, softer lines are produced by pastels than by graphite. Some people describe them as silky.

Using an ink with a water or alcohol base, pen and ink is a wet drawing medium. You can use brushes or a tool with a tip to draw with ink. Depending on how it is applied and the surface it is used on, this medium can produce fine, accurate lines or thin, feathery lines. Some alcohol-based inks are permanent, allowing for use with many media.
