Azurara and the portuguese referred to them as “captives.” Also, the expeditions sent by Henry came back with African slaves as a way to compensate for the expenses of their voyages.

The enslavement of Africans was seen as a military campaign because the people that the Portuguese encountered were identified as Moorish and thus associated with Islam. ((Slavery in Portugal, 2020). Some of the terms used by the Azurara and the Portuguese were very judgmental. At the slave auction many there were many slaves who all looked a little different it was a “marvelous sight”.

They stated that some were fairly white enough to look upon and well proportioned, while others were less white but not black, “mulattoes”, and others were so black and ugly in both features and body. Muslims who ruled Iberia had categorized salves based on skin color. They considered darker-skinned people from sub-Saharan Africa inferior and most suitable for enslavement. Christian Iberians came to hold similar views to sub-Saharan Africans as well.
