What was the time period of the story?

Romeo and Juliet was set in 14th century Italy. During this time, the people were known to find suitors for their children and convince them to marry men that they chose.
This was the case as seen in the fact that Capulet and Lady Capulet tried to convince their daughter to marry Paris. They were frustrated about her refusal and that was why Lady Capulet promised Paris that she would know her daughter's mind by the next day.
One ritual that continued to the time of the story was the old black box being used to hold the villagers’ names. This ritual was necessary to ensure conformity among the members of the community because it kept a sense of tradition to the Lottery, so the villagers would fear discontinuing the Lottery- they’d be afraid of what would happen if they stopped the ancient ritual- it had been going on for a long time, so none of the villagers knew what would happen if they discontinued it.
