The reason why learning and scholarships may have been considered important to Assyrian Kings was that it helped them to find out the will of the gods.

Why did the Assyrian Kings sponsor learning?

The Mesopotamians were deeply religious and believed that their gods could affect their successes or bring about their failure. They had gods who affected things like the harvest and gods who even affected fertility and success in war.

A large part of the power that Assyrian kings wielded was from people believing that they spoke to the gods and were close to divinity so they did not want to be on the bad sides of these gods.

In those times, there was religious training and learning where certain people would be selected as oracles and could have to learn more about the gods and how to please them.

As a result, Assyrian Kings sponsored learning with scholarships so that they could understand the will of the gods better and act accordingly.
