The temperance movement truly started in the 1820's when people started thinking that beer and wine brought evil spirits into the body. The movement was not originally against alcoholism, but for the elimination of evil spirits. The movement spread rapidly, and in 12 years they had 1,250,000 members. The group was called The American Temperance Society, and they were against beer and wine.

The government tried to assist in the movement, and in Great Britain, they heavily taxed the pubs. Movements all over the world were put in place to regulate drinking in public bars. This meant you had to have a license and there where certain opening times.

The movement declined when the crime rate went through the rood due to mafias. The government also stopped assisting the movement because they knew the beer alcohol would still be sold, and they wanted to tax it.

Hope this Helps! :)

The temperance movement started in the 1820's. This is when people started thinking that wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks brought on demonic or evil spirits. They thought these things would ttactch themselves to you. But this movement was not originally against alcoholism. But is was for the protection and demolishment of evil or demonic spirits. This movement spread at a very rapid pace. And in almost twelve whole years there were over , and in 12 years 1,250,000 members that supported this movement. This group of people was called The "American Temperance Society". The American Temperance Society was against acoholic drinks such as wine and beer. The government tried to help the movement, and in Great Britain, they raised taxes in local pubs and bars. These Movements were put into action all over the world to regulate drinking in public pubs and bars. There were also strict opening timea and you had to carry a licence with you. This act soon declined when the crime rate went through the rood due to mafias. The government also stopped assisting the movement because they knew that beer, wine and alcohol would still present and be sold under the table. but in the 1850's the act was completely stopped.

I hope this helps you out and if it did please mark brainliest :)
