Maintaining silence is just one of Ernest Hemingway's writing strategies. The same writing strategies he used in "hills like white elephants".

His writings corresponded to the definition of something like a "writerly text" as used in literature.

For his characters and settings, he always provides simply the most basic details, leaving that as well up to the reader to extrapolate or make any assumptions.

He declined to just provide vivid descriptions of the situation. The implication for readers would be to do DIY. In this way, readers are provided with additional opportunities to engage with the story.
