Based on your reading, how, if at all, has the Roman Republic shaped government today, particularly in republics? How can its in

fluence be found in the United States? Compare and contrast the dictatorships described in "The Roman Republic" to more modern versions of dictatorships (or how we conceive of them today). Do they share any similarities? What are the differences between them? Would you be willing to (temporarily) give up democratic values and political process if it meant safety in a time of crisis?

Why did the Plateau Indians construct pit houses?
drek231 [11]

Answer:

They had well established winter villages built on the banks of a major waterway.  Homes were built partially underground. Some were little round houses with dirt roofs.  Some were long lodges. They were both pit-houses.

To build a pit-house, first you dug a pit about six feet deep.  Some pit-houses were built for a small family group and perhaps were only 20 feet in diameter. But some were much larger - as much as 60 feet wide and 100 feet long.  The small ones were usually oval in shape. The large ones were usually rectangular. But construction of all pit-houses started by digging a pit that was the outline of the house.

Once you had dug the pit, next you piled up rocks to make walls. Then you added some wooden posts to support a roof.  Roofs were made of everything from planks to woven reeds. (Baskets and mats were also made out of reeds.)

What aspects of calvinism might have appealed to people in a time of uncertainty?
Paraphin [41]

Calvinism is basically Protestantism, but since John Calvin played a huge role in Calvinism, it is named after him. The people who practiced Calvinism, often believed they were "chosen" by God to like on their life and do what they are told. They thought that God had picked them to make a perfect Christian community, as they had lived good and true lives so they were hand chosen by God himself. They trusted in the fact that if they did this and created a pure Christian community, while living a happy life with no sin, they would earn salvation from God.
