The use of microorganism metabolism to remove pollutants such as oil spills in the water bodies id known as bioremediation.

Bioremediation is the branch of biotechnology which deals with the use of living organisms, like microorganism and bacteria, in the removal of pollutants, contaminants, and toxin from soil, water. It also used to clean up oil spills or contaminated ground water.

In this method, the microorganism grow or work under suitable condition, after the growth of microorganism, these microorganisms eats up toxic waste and digest them to release out gases like ethane and carbon dioxide.

Not all bacteria, fungi are useful in bioremediation method, only some microorganism are used to detoxify the pollutants. Example in oil spills pollutant the microorganism used is Pseudomonas putida.
