According to Michael Meister's introduction to The Inferno, Dante's story still has a powerful effect on its readers for hundreds of years because many people still struggle with the age-old question of what it always means to be a good person.

He claims in his book, "Introduction to the Inferno," that there is still a war between good and evil within each and every person. Additionally, Dante's literary style is still accessible today. Even now, publishing such profoundly meaningful novels grounded in reality continues to capture the public's interest.

The poet's descent into hell is described in the tale. Dante goes through the Nine Circles of Hell, led by the poet Virgil until reaching the core, where Satan himself sits. Following their exiting Hell, Dante and Virgil will travel to Purgatory before continuing to Heaven.
