A client is admitted to the hospital with an exacerbation of myasthenia gravis and the appropriate nursing actions include the following below:

  • Monitor respiratory status.
  • Monitor speech and swallowing abilities to prevent aspiration.
  • Encourage the client to sit up when eating.

<h3>What is Myasthenia gravis?</h3>

This is referred to a rare autoimmune disorder which is characterized by a breakdown in communication between the nerves and muscles which are present in the body system.

This leads to fatigue and weakening of the muscles which are controlled voluntary thereby making it very difficult for some activities to be done due to the destruction of the neuromuscular connections.

The nurse when caring for such patient should ensure that respiratory status are monitored so as to know the right steps to take to prevent complications.

In this situation, there is difficulty in chewing which is why the patient should always sit up in other to avoid choking.
