The American military operation aimed to buy time by gradually bolstering the South Vietnamese military's power and re-equipping it with cutting-edge weapons so that it could defend its country on its own. The Nixon Doctrine's foundation was established by this policy.

The final American combat soldiers left South Vietnam two months after the Vietnam Peace Agreement was signed, and Hanoi has since freed most of the surviving American POWs detained in North Vietnam. The United States eight-year direct involvement in the Vietnam War came to an end.

North Vietnam's aim to unite the entire nation under a single communist dictatorship based on those of the Soviet Union and China, which had overthrown the French colonial administration of Vietnam in 1954, was at the core of the struggle.

When did supermax prisons begin to emerge throughout the united states?
zlopas [31]
Whereas the first prison of this type in the U.S. was Alcatraz, which was opened in 1934, it still wasn't called supermax prison. The first officially recognized supermax prison (i.e. prison with maximum security) was established in 1984 in Marion, after two inmates of Federal Penitentiary killed two guards. That prison was transformed into a supermax facility, which was followed by dozens of other prisons throughout the States.
