The 1815 congress, known as the Congress of Vienna or Vienna settlement, attempted to restore order in Europe under 3 principles:

1. Principle of Legitimacy

2. Principle of balance of power

3. Principle of rewards and punishments

The Vienna settlement took place in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon Bonapart in Waterloo. It was an agreement between Austria, England, France, and Prussia. The aim was to restore peace and order in Europe.

Under the principle of Legitimacy, the agreement seek the restoration of monarchies and dynasties that ruled previous to the Napoleonic wars.

The principle of balance of power tried to guarantee peace between nations, considering that no state should be more powerful than another one.

Following the principle of rewards and punishments, the congresses agreed to compensate the allies who fought against Napoleon with territories. At the same time, France and nations that had allied with Napoleon had to be punished.
