Players compete to hit or drive a golf ball as far as possible in the long drive sport. Professional tournaments and exhibitions include top long drives in competition.

Professional long drivers can average over 356 yards (320 m) in competition, compared to top PGA Tour drivers' averages of 305 yards (274 m) and the typical amateur's 225 yards (201 m). In contests, some shots can travel beyond 400 yards (366 m). With a 43.5" steel-shafted persimmon wood driver, 64-year-old Mike Austin set the world record for the longest drive in a competition in 1974 at the US Senior National Open Qualifier at 515 yards (471 m). Allen Doyle set the record for the European Long Drive Championship in September 2005 at 473 yards (433 meters). Nico Grobbelaar set the benchmark distance for the South African Long Drive Championship in September 2012 at 506 yards (462.9 meters).
