Based on the fact that the research is about highly intelligent people who are allowed to start college, the independent variable would be the year the person started college.

What is the research independent variable?

The independent variable of a research is the measure that is believed to cause a change in the dependent variable.

The dependent variable here is the significant scientific discoveries that could have been made.

The independent variable is therefore the age a person started college and it has to be early which is why people who started college at 15 years or less are being interviewed.
