  • Alabama had the highest unemployment rates among other southern states at this time of The Great Depression, a period of substantial economic slump that followed the 1929 stock market crash.
  • During this time, the number of employed people in Birmingham, Alabama decreased by 100,000, down to just 15,000. America was in a state of hopelessness and despair at the moment.
