The purpose of the colonies that Britain had in the Americas was to provide them with a lot of raw materials. These raw materials would be used to provide goods which the British would then sell to the colonies once more.

The reason for this was mercantilism which posited that there was a finite amount of resources on Earth. Countries therefore needed to take as much resources as they could from their colonies in order to be richer and more powerful than others.
