    Juries in the county, which includes Houston, have imposed the death penalty more than any other country in the US. Many of Texas's most troubling death penalty cases are rooted in a corrosive system of racism. Harris County was named one of 16 outlier countries in the US, where five or more death sentences were assessed between 2010 and 2015. In the countries examined it was found that 41% of death sentences were given to black and defendants and 69% to minorities overall.

   Juries across the county are proving increasingly reluctant to sentence defendants to death penalty, instead choosing option of life imprisonment without parole. The last trial where prosecutors sought death penalty was in 2014.
