According to self-discrepancy theory, the emotion that arises from discrepancies between ought and actual selves is depression.

The self -discrepancy theory states that individuals establish a comparison between their actual self to the internalized standards of their ideal self. If one finds inconsistencies between the ideal self and the actual self result in emotional discomforts. This self-discrepancy is the gap between two of the self-representations which eventually lead to negative emotions.

Depression is associated with the same concept- a conflict between a person's actual self and some already stated standard or goal. Agitated depression is triggered by an actual discrepancy, which is eventually characterized by feelings of guilt, apprehension, anxiety or fear.
