Climate change may not primarily be caused by the ozone hole. Although a larger ozone hole does not contribute to global warming, the presence of ozone, a greenhouse gas, has a warming impact. The ozone hole itself has a minor cooling effect (about 2 % of the warming effect of greenhouses gases) because ozone in the stratosphere absorbs heat radiated to space by gases in a lower layer of Earth’s atmosphere. A small amount of heat can escape from that area into space as a result of the loss of ozone.
