Recombinant DNA technology is dependent on a particular class of enzymes, known as restriction endonucleases, that cut DNA at specific nucleotide sequences.

Recombinant DNA technology alternates genetic material to improve and obtain desired characteristics in a living organism. These require the following procedures i.e. Isolation of DNA, Cutting of DNA, Joining of DNA, and Amplifying of DNA. This is made possible by two enzymes, restriction endonucleases, and ligase.

A restriction endonuclease recognizes a specific sequence of DNA and cuts within, or close to, that sequence. Restriction endonucleases are called scissors of rDNA technology.
