The formal operational stage is when children can think and reason about abstract ideas and hypothetical situations.

Starting about the age of twelve, the formal operational stage lasts into adulthood. As teenagers move through this stage, they develop the capacity to think abstractly by manipulating concepts in their heads, independent of the use of actual manipulation.

The theory of cognitive development created by the Swiss psychologist, epistemologist, and biologist Jean Piaget includes the formal operational stage of cognition. The nature and growth of human intelligence are thoroughly explained by this idea.

Four phases were identified by Piaget as the stages of thought development. The final one is formal thought, which typically begins around the age of 11 and occurs at the start of puberty.
