Megaloblastic anemia refers to the abnormally large size of red blood cells. This is associated with deficiency of Vitamin B₁₂ or Vitamin B₉. The large red blood cells are unable to perform their function of transport of oxygen. This results in anemia. Additionally, there is lack of normal red blood cell.

The anemia results in symptoms issues with balance and memory loss. Vitamin B₁₂ and Vitamin B₉ stabilize the structure of chromosomes and assist in production of precursors required in DNA synthesis.
