Jacques Cartier Italian explorer led expeditions for France, exploring the east coast of America and hoping to discover a route to Asia.

Italian explorer Jacques Cartier oversaw French voyages that explored America's east coast in search of a shortcut to Asia. French adventurer and sailor Jacques Cartier was born in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France, in 1491, and passed away there on September 1, 1557.

Francis I gave him the task of exploring North America in the hopes of finding wealth, spices, and a route to Asia. Despite the fact that Jacques Cartier's investigations of the St. Lawrence River and the North American coast (1534, 1535, 1541-42) did not yield the intended results, they did serve as the foundation for eventual French claims to Canada.
