One of the finest military commanders in British history was William Pitt.
In the British government, he held the position of secretary of state during the French and Indian War (1754–63), also known as the Seven Years' War in Europe. He effectively oversaw British military activities and carried out political plans throughout this time. Under his leadership, the British Empire expanded to include Canada and the majority of other contested territories in North America, and England solidified its position as the world's most powerful nation. On November 15, 1708, William Pitt was born. His parents were Lady Harriet Villiers, an English-Irish nobleman, and Robert Pitt, a member of the British Parliament. Pitt was raised in luxurious surroundings and attended some of the best schools in England. From 1719 to 1726, he attended Eton, after which he transferred to Oxford and Utrecht in 1727. As a child, he battled a number of ailments, making it difficult for him to engage in the sports and outdoor activities that other boys his age frequently engaged in. He was, nonetheless, a bright, inquisitive child who spent his days immersed in music, art, and books.
