We can summarize the "The Yellow Wallpaper" by saying its theme is freedom to express oneself and the story is about a woman who obsesses over a wallpaper.

<h3>Summary of "The Yellow Wallpaper"</h3>

First, after reading the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," we can identify freedom to express oneself as its major theme. The setting, which is the room where the woman is confined, contributes to this theme as it represents how the narrator lacks such freedom.

Characterization also contributes to the theme, since the woman is characterized as dominated by her authoritarian husband. She is also characterized as losing touch with reality as her voice, opinions, and ideas are left unheard.

The story itself is about this woman, the narrator, who is diagnosed by her own husband as mentally ill. Having her health as an excuse, he forces her to be confined to her room, and he forbids her to write or use her creativity in any way. Therefore, he takes away her freedom to express herself.

As the plot progresses, the woman loses touch with reality and ends up obsessing over the wallpaper in her room. She begins to hallucinate, seeing the figure of a woman in the wallpaper being strangled. As we can tell, the images she sees represent her own feelings concerning her situation.

We can conclude that the explanation above provides a summary of "The Yellow Wallpaper" that includes its theme, setting, and characterization.

Martha mentions her truest feeling for him by showing her love fantasy.

  • It was oval in shape and smooth to the touch, a milky white color with specks of orange and violet. It resembled a small egg.
  • Martha mentioned in the letter that she had discovered the pebble on the Jersey shoreline, precisely where the land and sea met at high tide and where things joined together but also split apart.
  • The pebble was something she picked up, carried in her breast pocket for several days where it appeared weightless, and then sent through the mail through air as a symbol of her deepest affections for him, all because of this separate-but-together character, she wrote.
