Lightning is found in the atmosphere.
Lightning is the result of an electrostatic discharge between two imbalanced regions: one in the atmosphere and the other in the ground, or between two regions in the atmosphere. Most of them take place within the clouds.
During this discharge, electromagnetic energy is released from a negative charge to a positive charge. As a visible result, it provokes flashes of light and vibrant sounds called thunder.
There are three types of lightning:
- Intra cloud
- From cloud to cloud
- From cloud to the ground
