An African diaspora religion known as Haitian Vodou emerged there between the 16th and 19th centuries.
It developed as a result of a process of syncretism between a number of West and Central African traditional faiths and the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity.
The religion is not governed by a single body, and its adherents, often referred to as Vodouists, Vodouisants, or Serviteurs, are very diverse.
Vodou is centered on spirits called lwa. They are compared to Roman Catholic saints because they frequently take their names and characteristics from traditional West and Central African divinities.
The Rada and the Petwo are two of the several nanchon ("nations") that make up the lwa. There are many tales and legends regarding these lwa, which are thought to be servitors of a transcendent being.
