The thirteenth-largest city in the country and the fifth-largest in the U.S. state of Texas, respectively, is Fort Worth. It is the administrative center of Tarrant County, which extends over almost 350 square miles (910 k) and is divided into Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise counties. The estimated population of Fort Worth for the 2022 US Census was 958,692. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan region, the fourth-most populated metropolitan area in the US, with Fort Worth as its second-largest city.
As an army outpost on a cliff overlooking the Trinity River, Fort Worth was founded in 1849. The commerce in Texas Longhorn cattle has historically been centered in Fort Worth. It continues to value its Western history and conventional architectural and design elements. The United States Navy's first ship to bear the city's name is the USS Fort Worth (LCS-3). Although Fort Worth's population has nearly doubled since 2000, the nearby city of Dallas has traditionally retained the majority for as long as statistics have been recorded. Fort Worth has also had some of the nation's fastest population growth in recent years.
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and various institutions with modern architectural designs are also in Fort Worth. Louis Kahn designed the Kimbell Art Museum, and Renzo Piano added on to it. Tadao Ando created the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, designed by Philip Johnson, houses American art. A collection of Western art by American artists, with a focus on Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, is housed in the Sid Richardson Museum, which David M. Schwarz redesigned. Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta created the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.
Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan, the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and the Texas A&M University School of Law are among the universities that call Fort Worth home. Fort Worth is home to the corporate headquarters of a number of large multinational companies, including Bell Textron, American Airlines, BNSF Railway, and Chip 1 Exchange.
