People from many different countries made the decision to leave their homeland and immigrate to the United States in the late 1800s. Between 1870 and 1900, almost 12 million immigrants entered the country, and many of them came in search of personal independence or protection from political and religious persecution. The majority of these individuals came from Germany, Ireland, and England in the 1870s and 1880s, which were the main countries from whom immigrants came prior to the American Civil War.
Even yet, between the beginning of the California gold rush in 1849 and 1882, when their immigration was prohibited by federal law, a sizable number of Chinese people travelled to the United States.
