The American Indian peoples that interacted with the settlers of New Netherlands included the Mohawks and the Mahicans.

Who interacted with the Dutch?

When the Dutch got to the Americas, they needed to establish a fort that would enable them to trade with the Natives. This fort was established around Albany, New York and was called Fort Orange.

Fort Orange enabled the Dutch to trade with the first Native Americans they had met who included the Mohawks and the Mahicans. When war broke out between these tribes, the Dutch also established relations with the Munsee tribe.
